This is a great post with real world insight. In my experience with selection and hiring, I have found exactly what you write with regard to the resume, there is not a one size fits all. Anyone promoting a specific format or standard has little experience with selection processes. Each hiring manager has their bias. Some use software review and others read them all. I worked with selection committees where it was obvious that reviewers keyed on different aspects of the resume.

Thank you ST2. I especially like your approach with questioning that allows the candidate to elaborate on non-work experience in a way that makes it relevant to the position. Finding people who have leadership skills is often a challenge and that is a good tactic for uncovering those gems.

An example of how I have used such questioning is to find out if the candidate reflects on their actions. A person who easily recalls specific examples likely takes the time to analyze their work and interactions for successes and flaws. The fewer details, likely the less retrospection. You are correct, they have first to have had the experience. I also find that asking them to tell me about themselves will reveal areas which provide great follow up questions on their experience.

If they mention they belong to social or service organizations I like to ask what roles they play withing the organization with relation to marketing, managing or leading. I am looking for character traits of active participants rather than members on a roster. Tell me that you coordinate the softball team schedule, you host the new member orientation or hold office and you have exhibited qualities. I am seeking leaders regardless of the position I am hiring, I want a thinker, a planner, a coordinator, an advocate.

Thanks for your insight and sharing.

Presently, some forward thinkers are attempting to "find the future" for photography given the fast pace changes that have occured with camera innovations and cell phone cameras in recent years.
Hard copy of images are in rapid decline: look at Kodak's recent filing for Chapter 11 bankrupcy.
Younger consumers (Gen. Y) are seemingly happy with electronic data storage of their pictures.

Are family photo albums in printed format a thing of the past? How will relevant photos be passed on from one generation to the other without being lost forever? Is renting space on a fee only remote server the only answer?

Any answers to these questions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
